Foreign Doctors to the Aid of Chol – Chol

The Chol – Chol Foundation, in response to deplorable health conditions in Mapuche communities, has teamed up with two other institutions to provide volunteer physicians in the county of Nueva Imperial.

INPROA (Instituto de Promoción Agraria) and the Chol – Chol Foundation split costs for medical volunteers travel fares. Once here, the Chol – Chol Foundation house the doctors and assist their integration into their hands-on duties the Chol- Chol medical clinic. This clinic, a critical health resource for many rural people, is understaffed and short of funds. The municipality of Nueva Imperial, which runs the clinic, has provided the legal framework to allow the foreign doctors to practice at the clinic and provides a small stipend for their service.

We hope that this program will bear many fruits, and that the doctors enjoy living in the Chol – Chol community. On the 6th of November, the first physician, Dr. Michael Coomes, arrived, and will be followed in January 2000 by Dr. Janine Young. Both are from the United States.

We would like to thank the Municipality of Nueva Imperial, and INPROA for helping to make this program a reality.
