The Chol-Chol Foundation is originally a US based non-profit organization (501(c)(3)), granted tax-exempt status in 1971. In the past it has worked from an office in Washington D.C., focusing its attention on the Mapuches in Chile, but also providing help in small educational projects in Africa and Asia.

In 1996 the Chol-Chol Foundation’s American Board of Directors gave mandatory powers to a newly formed Chilean Board of Directors. Concurrently the Foundation shut down its operations in Africa and Asia in order to focus solely on work with the Mapuches of Chile.

In 1999, the Chol-Chol Foundation decided that it was more practical to separate the American and Chilean operations. New statutes were written to transform the Chol-Chol Foundation from an American operation to a Chilean Foundation. The US Foundation continues, as a sister Foundation, to fundraise and administer American donations on behalf of the newly formed Chilean Foundation.
