InterConnection Laptops Connect Seattle Youth to Opportunity

Juma Ventures operates concession businesses at professional sports and entertainment venues with the purpose of providing employment and job training to low-income youth ages 16-24, who are disconnected or are at risk of disconnection from the opportunity pathways of school and work.

Juma employs youth at their social enterprises located within CenturyLink Field, T-Mobile Park, and the University of Washington’s Husky Stadium. There, they develop critical on-the-job skills, receive financial education, and attend job readiness workshops. Once hired, Juma provides 90 days of continued support to increase retention and success. Juma’s goal is to ensure that when low-income youth look for future employment or educational opportunities, they will have developed the skills and competencies employers look for in candidates and will be better positioned for jobs with career advancement.

Laptops Grant Access to Online Resources in the Modern Job Market

InterConnection provided Juma with 10 laptops to enable Seattle youth to research employment opportunities, write resumes, apply for college, and learn computer skills for the work place. Laptops allow individuals entering the job market to stay connected to opportunities available online wherever they are.

Program Outcomes

Since 2013, Juma Seattle has hired over 650 low-income youth. Collectively, they have earned over $2 million in wages and saved $300,000 for educational expenses—all while developing career skills and receiving financial education.
