Center for Indigenous Women Communicators
The Center for Indigenous Women Communicators is a non-profit organization. Its activities are determined by the indigenous women who participate and coordinated by a directive committee.
The CMCI functions primarily as a center for women to unite and communicate, first among ourselves for purposes of self-definition and clarity of purpose. Secondly, to develop skills in communications technology to enable better representation in the world and in the media. All women who wish to become associates are invited and welcomed provided they are indigenous.
The CMCI finally lends and exchanges services with non-governmental and governmental agencies in order to develop communications technologies. Video and photography are often used as tools for research, reflection and organization. Workshops are offered in skills of video, photography, computer use and internet communication. The Center promotes and supports projects in any of these mediums.
One of the ongoing questions explored in this process is the oral Mayan languages and the investigation of how visual media can cross barriers of language and literacy. Video produced in and by the communities are used to share information with neighboring communities who can indentify with the local images.
