InterConnection Computers Enable Chicago Healthcare Providers to Better Serve Communities
Near North Health Service Corporation (Near North) is a nonprofit health care organization providing Chicago’s communities with access to high quality health care services regardless of any patient’s ability to pay for care.
Near North operates eight community healthcare centers and two satellite W.I.C. centers throughout Chicago, Illinois. They offer a variety of services including: family-focused primary medical care, comprehensive social services, health and nutrition education services, and specialty services for vision, dental, and psychiatry needs.
Additional Computers Improve Staff Efficiency
InterConnection awarded Near North with 6 laptops, 10 desktops, and 20 monitors so they could treat more patients needing access to health care services. The computers are used by staff in various departments, who serve patients both directly and indirectly.
According to Berneice Mills-Thomas, Chief Executive Officer of Near North, “The InterConnection Computer Grant has impacted Near North tremendously. The use of the computers has enabled our staff to work more efficiently.”
Near North has been able to increase accessibility to their services; with InterConnection laptops, staff working in the field can treat more communities in need.
Program Outcomes
Near North has provided care to Chicago’s communities since 1966. Today, they primarily serve minority individuals living below 200% of the federal poverty guidelines. Most patients live in food deserts where access to healthy foods is not accessible, and social determinants to health include poverty, gang and domestic violence, and other at-risk behaviors.
According to patient survey results 90% of Near North patients would recommend Near North doctors to friends or family, and 92% would recommend their health centers to families or friends.
