PSSSSST!! IN NEED OF A HOUSE?

"...they said, 'Let us start building at once!' and they set their hands to the good work." Nehemiah2:18

Are you a family in need of decent, safe housing?

Habitat believes that all human beings deserve a simple, decent place to live with terms they can afford to pay. Belize City Habitat for Humanity is currently constructing homes in the Belize City area - up to Hattieville and up to Ladyville. If you are a family in need, interested in owning your own home, please read on!

Who are families in need?

Families who are..

  • living in unacceptable conditions
  • struggling to pay for necessities
  • suffering from economic hardship
How does it work?

Habitat works in communities through self-help housing cooperatives called "affiliates." The affiliate is run mostly by volunteers and is responsible for fund-raising, family selection, overseeing construction, etc. The Belize City Affiliate was approved by Habitat for Humanity International in May 1999.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Are you a family in need?
  • Are you willing to work on the building of your own home and the homes of others?
  • Is your family income between $100 and $460 per week?
  • Do you have title or long-term lease for the land you wish to build on?
  • Do you have at least one (1) dependent child?
  • Have you lived in Belize for 3 consecutive years or more?
If you can answer "YES!" to all of these questions, you could be eligible to build a home with Belize City Habitat for Humanity.

What is the Habitat house like?

The Belize City Habitat house is a concrete house with a zinc roof. The sizes of the houses are 22 ft. x 24 ft. for the 2-bedroom and 22' x 30' for the 3-bedroom.

How much does it cost?

Habitat is not a give-away program. Once your home has been built, Habitat sells it to you for the cost of materials plus any contracted labour. Much of the labour (we call it "sweat equity") is completed by the home owners and other volunteers. There is no profit added to the cost of the house and no interest charged on the mortgage. The estimated cost of a 2 bedroom Habitat house in Belize City is $30,000 and the estimated cost of a 3 bedroom Habitat house in Belize City is $29,800.

How can I apply?

If you are a low-income family in need of decent housing and have the will to work to help yourself and others, you can apply for a Habitat home.
