Habitat for Humanity Belize embraces the new year 2002 with lots of enthusiasm and hope for great accomplishments.  Here are the highlights from January to June 2002. 

Habitat for Humanity Belize Welcomes Stasia

It’s the beginning of the new year and we have been blessed with an increase of staff and the installation of SUN Systems, accounting program used by all Habitat’s organizations around the world.  To operate this high tech  system we are privileged to have a new staff member in the person of Ms. Stasia Soutar.  Ms. Soutar is a graduate from the University of Belize from the faculty of Business Administrator.  She will be working in the National Office using her talents and skills to carry the accounts for the organization.  STASIA, on behalf of Habitat for Humanity Belize we Welcome you wish you all the best on your new assignment. 

Training National & Affiliate Staff

On January 14 our very own Financial Consultant in the Area Office Mr. Cesar Solis visited Belize to install Habitat’s Accounting Computerized System known as SUN. During his two week visit in Belize Mr. Solis trained Ms. Soutar with the basic knowledge to operate the program.   

On January 28 Ms. Carla Sainsbury National Partner departed to Costa Rica to participate in a three weeks orientation program for Habitat’s National Partners around Latin America and the Caribbean.  Ms. Sainsbury is preparing to take over management of the Belize City Affiliate from our International Partner Ms. Rita Wilson when she departs in March.    

Good Bye to Sister Brenda

One of Habitat’s big supporters over the years is Sister Brenda Gonzales from Sisters of Charity.  On February 3, 2002 Habitat Belize staff attended the farewell party organize by the Sisters of Charity, given us the opportunity to say Farewell to the good fairy Sister.   GOOD LUCK Sister Brenda we all will MISS YOU.   

Affiliate Development in Belize

After a series of meetings with different communities the National Office is now closer to having a new affiliate.  On April 17, 2002 Mr. Michael Sanchez and Albert Hoy members of the National Board accompanied the National Coordinator Ms. Mirna Paul & IP Elisa Rivera to Independence village.  The team from the National Office met with the formed Steering Committee and conducted the official visit to the area.  It is expected that IP Elisa Rivera will relocate to that area to work closely with the steering committee and help them to comply with all requirements to get affiliated to Habitat Belize.  KEEP WORKING YOU GUYS!!!

Voluntarism is increasing

Hey guess what?? Voluntarism in Belize is becoming the “IN” thing to do now a day.  On that note I would like to tell you that people from all over are opening their heart and giving more of themselves.  Over the past six months the Belize City Affiliate has been blessed with an increase of local volunteers at their worksite.  The active affiliate has hosted the following groups since January through June 2002.

International Volunteers: Fordum University from New York, Rockers University, Illinois Institute of Technology, Church of Christ from Chicago, Seattle University, Nurse students from Seattle University,

Local Volunteers: St John’s Junior College Students, Ladyville Technical High, Youths from Open Door Believers Chapel, Center of Employment Training -students from their regular program and a group of students from the Non Traditional Women’s Program-, Employees from Bank of Nova Scotia – Belize City Branch-, KPMG, & The Belize Defence Force.

On behalf of Habitat for Humanity Staff, Board of Directors and Partner families we would like to extend a big THANK YOU to all the volunteers who participated in its labor of love.

Belize City Affiliate Volunteer appreciation night

On June 29, 2002 the Belize City Affiliate, Partner Families and Staff held a volunteer appreciation night. Highlights of the event featured a dance by Ms. Delanni Thurton and refreshments.  The Partner Families had the opportunity to express their sincere THANK YOU to the volunteers as well to Construction Supervisor Kenrick Logan and his team.  In addition, business houses were recognized for their support and past contributions. Habitat Belize Staff was also recognized.  Each volunteer and business house received a certificate of appreciation for their labor of love and assistance to the Organization. 

Habitat for Humanity Belize is definitely making a difference in our community and will continue to do so for the years to come.  Volunteers & donors we need your support to continue to make this program a success.
